What does moblog stand for?
Moblog is a merging of two words; the word mobile and the word blog. Blog is a shortening of the word weblog and a weblog is an online journal. Got all that?
What is a moblog?
A moblog is usually a mobile picture blog which means pictures uploaded from a mobile device like a cell phone or a personal digitial assistant.
A moblog could also consist of text or video posted from a mobile device. The content of a moblog varies from poster to poster but common things posted are
of pictures of the posters daily activities or travels (aka a photo journal).
What devices can be used to moblog?
A variety of devices can be used to moblog from. Any cell phone which has a camera and is able to email photos to an email address is capable of moblogging from.
Cell phones with cameras are quickly becoming standard in the United States. Other combinations of PDA+Cell Phone can also be used to moblog from like the T-Mobile Sidekick (what I use).
Some mobile devices are better to moblog with than others. For example, most cell phones only have a numberic keypad so when you need to type in the email address to
send the photo to it can be a pain. More user friendly devices like the T-Mobile Sidekick or an iPAQ with wireless access and a keyboard/touchscreen can make it easier
to enter the email address and/or a caption for your photo. Image quality is another consideration as well. The T-Mobile Sidekick originally only came with a 120x90
camera and now has a 320x240 camera available for it. However, newer cell phones can have anywhere from 640x480 (or 480x640) up to a 3.2 megapixel camera built into them.
History of Moblogs
Apparently the first post from a mobile device to the internet was by Stuart Woodward, in January 2001. Other popular moblog sites like TextAmerica registered their domain in July of 2002,
Yafro registered in August of 2003, and Mobog registered their domain in December of 2003. FriendSurfer enabled users to moblog sometime in early 2004. Yahoo has also recently (in July 2004)
added the ability to upload pictures directly from your cell phone as well.
